I didn’t mean to snub him,. I've known the lieutenant governor for 15 years and we've been good friends….I didn't intend to snub him. There are other states where the governor is not the chairman.
(Maybe it's the governor's approval rating and you are running from him like you are from the president?)

This whole joke is even worse because it's so old.
The "And I stopped beating my wife…" response to an allegation that the speaker wants to diminish the credibility of goes back a ways, so far as I know.
I think the premise is, "my opponents are making lots of scurrilous accusations, like the one you just asked me, so I'm going to deny another absurd one randomly and preemptively, while I have the floor." I think it might have worked if he hadn't been rumored to have called Cindy a C***, or if he weren't running for president.
Or if he didn't beat his wife!
